Just bought a 2001 X5 with the 'TRANS FAILSAFE PROG' error, drives fantastic for a short time then the error pops up and goes into limp mode.
Had a look around at what could have gone wrong and I don't think i've seen this issue posted:
When the error pops up you can smell burning - stopped and opened the bonnet and there was a small amount of smoke coming from an open hose inside the engine bay (transmission breather pipe?).
Any suggestions to what could be causing this? Our main suspicion is transmission fluid.
Anyone else seen this problem? Again, not something I've seen on forums before!
